What is Telegraphing and How Can it be Avoided?

The term ‘telegraphing’ describes visible raised areas on the surface of a resilient floor, like sheet vinyl or luxury vinyl tile. These areas generally appear as waves or ridges. Telegraphing is caused by irregularities in the subfloor that transmit through the material, distorting the finish and creating an undulating appearance. Moisture in the subfloor can also be a contributing factor. It’s particularly noticeable on thin sheet vinyl, which has a lot of drape, as well as light coloured and polished surfaces.

  9. Why Should You Choose a "phthalate-free" Floor?

    Why Should You Choose a

One of the health-related benefits of PRO-TEK™ WPC engineered vinyl flooring is its phthalate-free construction - but what are phthalates and why should you avoid them?

Phthalates are organic compounds that originate from phthalic acid. These compounds are used as plasticizers; they are added to materials like plastic and PVC to make it more flexible. When they are added, they don’t chemically attach themselves, so they can be released into the air. There is concern that inhaling them can have an adverse effect on our endocrine system, i.e. the organs and glands that produce hormones, and the reproductive system. Some plasticizers are also known carcinogens.

  10. Why is PRO-TEK™ WPC so quick to install?

    Before and after PRO-TEK™ installation
    Before and after PRO-TEK™ installation

One of the key benefits of PRO-TEK™ WPC engineered vinyl flooring is its fast installation, with minimal ‘prep’. Most vinyl stick-down floors require a fair amount of subfloor preparation, so what makes PRO-TEK™ WPC engineered vinyl flooring different?

The answer lies in the construction. Most sheet vinyl floors are relatively thin and measure between 1.2mm to 5mm. Luxury vinyl tiles tend to be slightly thicker and they’re made up of a PVC vinyl base layer, decorative PVC film and clear vinyl wear layer. In contrast, PRO-TEK™ WPC measures between 7mm - 8.5 mm and has six layers: an IXPE foam underlay base, a waterproof WPC (wood plastic composite) core structure layer with glueless joint, an LVT top layer, décor layer, wear layer and a UV layer on top. This makes the construction more stable; it feels a lot thicker and more rigid than vinyl and LVT, which tends to be quite flexible.
